Plant Care Guides

Begonia (Variegated) Care Guide.

Honest, experience-backed care guides written from years of growing these plants in a real home environment — not a greenhouse. No fluff, just what actually works.

Variegated Begonias are showstopping houseplants prized for their patterned foliage. They’re moderately easy to grow and reward consistent care with lush, colorful leaves.

Light

Bright indirect light brings out the best variegation. An east-facing window or a few feet from a south window is ideal. Too much direct sun bleaches the leaves; too little causes fading of the variegation pattern.

Watering

Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Begonias are susceptible to root rot if left in soggy soil, but they also dislike completely drying out. Water at the base rather than overhead to keep leaves dry and prevent powdery mildew.

Humidity

Moderate humidity (40–60%) is sufficient. Avoid misting the leaves directly as this promotes fungal issues. A humidifier nearby is the safest option if your space is very dry.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Begonias prefer being slightly root-bound; repot only when roots are visibly escaping drainage holes. Choose a pot with good drainage.

Fertilizing

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Reduce to once a month or stop in fall and winter.

Temperature

Keep between 65–80°F. Begonias are frost-sensitive and should never drop below 55°F. Avoid cold drafts from windows or doors.

Toxicity

Begonias are toxic to dogs and cats. The tubers (if present) are the most toxic part. Keep out of reach of pets.

What does Pre-Order mean?

Pre-Order status means a plant isn't quite ready to ship yet — but you can secure yours now before it sells out. There are typically two reasons you'll see it:

  • We're building the import order. We haven't placed the import yet and are gauging interest before we pull the trigger. Pre-ordering helps us hit the minimum and often unlocks better pricing and rarer selections for everyone.
  • The plants are here, but they're settling in. Freshly imported plants go through an acclimation period — we let them rest, rehydrate, and stabilize before they ship. Rushing that process isn't something we're willing to do.

Either way, your order is locked in at today's price, and you'll be among the first notified when your plant is ready to go. Always check the individual product description for estimated timelines specific to that listing.
